COMICO ART MUSEUM
Yufuin, Japan
2017, 2022
Nestled beneath the majestic Mount Yufu, Kengo Kuma’s COMICO ART MUSEUM YUFUIN (opened 2017, expanded 2022) functions as a piece of "auxiliary line" architecture, designed to weave contemporary art seamlessly into the local *Satoyama* (village-mountain) landscape. Eschewing the typical white-box museum typology, the building asserts a hushed, deep-black presence. Its defining feature is the exterior envelope clad entirely in *yakisugi* (traditional Japanese charred cedar), providing a textured, weather-resistant skin that grounds the structure in local vernacular craftsmanship. To harmonize with the small scale of the surrounding village houses, the volume is fragmented beneath several pitched roofs. Sharp, diagonal aluminum elements slice through these planes, purposefully echoing the dynamic, jagged silhouette of Mount Yufu above. This dialogue between the dark, tactile materiality of the earth and the ascending verticality of the mountains creates an intimately scaled yet spiritually expansive viewing environment.
