Oita Prefectural Library

Oita, Japan

1995

Completed in 1995 as the core of the Toyonokuni Information Library complex, the new Oita Prefectural Library demonstrates Arata Isozaki's mastery of Platonic geometry and monumental interiority. Moving away from the raw Brutalism of his 1966 library (now the Art Plaza), Isozaki here orchestrates a profound spatial sequence rooted in classical references. The visitor is immediately confronted by a dramatic entrance atrium—a towering 15-meter cubic void crowned by a suspended, skylit concrete disc that filters an ethereal, spiritual light. This geometric purity transitions into the spectacular main reading room, famously known as the "Room of One Hundred Pillars" (Hyakubashira-no-ma). Here, a gridded forest of one hundred concrete columns, spaced at strict 7.5-meter intervals beneath a cross-vaulted ceiling, evokes the sublime scale of ancient Roman basilicas or Islamic hypostyle halls, creating an almost sacred atmosphere for collective knowledge.
