Hotel Il Palazzo
Fukuoka, Japan
1989, 2023
Originally completed in 1989 by Pritzker laureate Aldo Rossi, Hotel Il Palazzo stands as Japan’s first design hotel and a masterclass in post-modern monumentality. Its iconic, windowless facade—composed of marbled red Iranian travertine intersected by vivid green copper lintels—acts as an imposing urban artifact, isolating the interior from the bustling streets of Fukuoka while referencing both Venetian palazzos and traditional Japanese kura (storehouses). The 2023 redesign by Uchida Design Inc. revitalizes this monumental structure by reimagining its spatial sequence. The new street-level entrance leads guests through a profound royal-blue tunnel—an homage to its original dance bar—down into the subterranean 'El Dorado' lounge, which now serves as the main reception. This underground space, featuring Uchida’s 'Dancing Water' sculpture, contrasts Rossi’s rigid, fortress-like exterior with an interior logic centered on softness, natural wood, and indirect lighting. By re-orchestrating the circulation, the redesign restores Rossi's vision of a 'borderless space' while establishing a new, serene dialogue between the monolithic architecture and the vibrant urban fabric.
