International Contemporary Sculpture Museum & Abade Pedrosa Museum

Santo Tirso, Portugal

2012

The MIEC and MMAP project in Santo Tirso is a rare collaboration between two Pritzker Prize laureates, Siza and Souto de Moura. The core challenge was to house a contemporary sculpture collection while rehabilitating the historic Abade Pedrosa Museum, located in the former guesthouse of the 8th-century São Bento Monastery. Rather than compete, the architects devised a strategy of architectural diplomacy: a shared entrance through a new white volume links both institutions via an enclosed corridor, allowing each museum to maintain its distinct identity. The new building's height was deliberately limited to the monastery's cornice line—a gesture of deference to the historic monument. The design prioritizes spatial continuity and institutional autonomy, creating a unified cultural complex that respects the layered history of the site while introducing a quiet, minimalist architectural language.
