Rolex Learning Center

Lausanne, Switzerland

2007~2010

Designed by SANAA for EPFL, the Rolex Learning Center replaces the idea of floors with a continuous, topographic slab. A single, gently undulating plate is perforated by fourteen circular patios that bring daylight deep inside and organize program as archipelagos: library, forum, study areas and services. Structure and envelope follow the landscape: a concrete ground plate, a lightweight steel-and-glulam roof carried by a dispersed field of slender columns, and bespoke curved glazing with tolerances for movement. The extreme continuity—no corridors, few doors—makes circulation emergent: paths climb and dip rather than turn. The building thus operates as an artificial landscape for learning, where microclimate, acoustics and visual horizons are tuned by slope, void and glass rather than by walls.
