St. Knut and St. Gertrude Chapels

Malmö, Sweden

1943

Designed by Sigurd Lewerentz for Malmö's Eastern Cemetery, the twin chapels of St. Knut and St. Gertrude represent a radical reimagining of sacred architecture. Built using the same materials internally and externally, the chapels blur the boundaries between inner and outer space, creating flowing rooms where furniture and symbols are deliberately minimized to give way to pure spatiality. Lewerentz's controversial vision omitted central altars and religious symbols, intending these spaces to serve people of different faiths through their universal, contemplative atmosphere rather than denominational decoration.
