Temple of Concordia with Fallen Icarus

Agrigento, Sicily, Italy

430 BC & 2011

The exceptional preservation of the Temple of Concordia (c. 430 BC) is due to its conversion into a Christian basilica in the 6th century AD, which saved it from being dismantled in the Middle Ages. Its name derives from a nearby Latin inscription, though its original dedication remains unknown. The bronze sculpture, "Fallen Icarus," is a work by Polish artist Igor Mitoraj. Originally part of a major temporary exhibition in the Valley in 2011, it was later permanently installed by popular demand. Mitoraj’s work reinterprets classicism through a modern lens; his signature fragmented style explores the fragility of humanity in contrast to the perceived permanence of classical ideals.
