Nestled within Shanghai's historic Fangta Garden, Feng Jizhong's He Lou Xuan (The Humble Hut) is a seminal work of modern Chinese architecture that reinterprets tradition through a modernist lens. Completed in 1986, it engages in a profound dialogue with the garden's ancient Song Dynasty pagoda. Rather than imitating classical forms, Feng employed a spare palette of steel, concrete, and glass to abstract the essence of traditional timber structures. The pavilion's asymmetric composition, open spatial flow, and seamless integration with the surrounding bamboo grove and reflective pool create a tranquil, poetic atmosphere.
