Gibellina Nuova

Sicily, Italy

1970~1990

Born from the 1968 Belice earthquake's destruction, Gibellina Nuova represents Europe's most radical urban experiment—an entire city reimagined as a living contemporary art museum. Conceived by mayor Ludovico Corrao and realized by international artists including Pietro Consagra, Alberto Burri, and Mimmo Paladino, this utopian settlement integrates monumental artworks directly into urban infrastructure. Streets, squares, and buildings serve dual functions as civic spaces and exhibition venues. The city's butterfly-shaped master plan disperses over 300 artistic interventions across residential districts, creating an unprecedented fusion of daily life and contemporary art that challenges conventional urban planning paradigms.
