Designed by Dominikus Böhm and completed in 1931, the Church of St. Joseph in Zabrze, Poland, is a monumental example of Brick Expressionism. Its stark geometric massing and slightly raised bell tower define its powerful exterior. The entrance, a 'Porta Sacra' with double arches, leads to a three-nave basilica interior. Characterized by shallow aisles and deep buttresses forming chapels, the space is unified by a coffered wooden ceiling and clad in simple brick, reflecting an ascetic aesthetic. The design emphasizes a clear spiritual axis and symbolic elements, making it a significant work of interwar ecclesiastical architecture.
