Lugdunum - Musée et Théâtres Romains

Lyon, France

1975

Designed by Bernard Zehrfuss and completed in 1975, the Lugdunum Museum is built directly into the hillside of Fourvière, on the site of ancient Roman theaters. The building is almost invisible from the outside, with a spiral concrete ramp that descends into exhibition spaces. Zehrfuss chose to bury the museum to respect the archaeological site, using raw concrete throughout. The museum's relationship with its context creates a dialogue between contemporary architecture and ancient ruins, connecting visitors to both the artifacts inside and the historical landscape outside.
