La Congiunta

Giornico, Switzerland

1992

Designed by Peter Märkli, La Congiunta is a long, narrow concrete volume built to house the sculptures of Hans Josephsohn. The building's form is a direct response to the linear geography of the valley. It consists of three main chambers of equal width but varying lengths, connected sequentially. Light enters through a translucent roof strip that runs the length of the building, creating a diffuse, even illumination. The raw, unfinished concrete surfaces and the simple, almost archaic forms create a powerful, contemplative space where architecture and sculpture are in direct dialogue.
